Article Highlights:

    * Marketers that send emails with images only will be missing a large audience
* To make your email stand out, design it so the copy is on a single screen above the fold
* Emails without social links are missing out on a powerful opportunity to extend their reach exponentially

Next In Focus
Emails that offend; type 1

The email industry has been around for more than a decade. In that time, industry leaders have done a great job of creating best practices for marketers to follow to ensure the success of their email marketing campaigns. It’s amazing to me, then, that so many bad emails continue to be sent.

In my inbox today, I’ve received three emails from one marketer, two emails that showed nothing but an ad above the fold, and a daily email that I really only want to receive once a week.

I know that we can do better than this. As a first step to getting us on track, I have created a list of offensive emails. Do you see your emails on this list?
Stay informed. For more insights into the latest digital marketing opportunities and challenges, attend the iMedia Brand Summit, March 6-9. Request your invitation today.

One-size-fits-all email newsletters
Most of us wouldn’t be caught dead in one-size-fits-all clothing, so why do marketers think it’s acceptable to send one email designed to fit the needs of all their audiences? These emails arrive in inboxes without customization and include massive amounts of information that cause recipients to keep scrolling and scrolling, despite being disengaged from the content.

A better practice is to ask subscribers for their email preferences during the opt-in process and create an email schedule that honors those preferences. For example, when subscribers opt in for a newsletter, ask what kinds of topics they want to get information about and how often they want to hear from you. Tailor your communications to subscribers’ wants and abide by their preferences so they look forward to hearing from you. Your audiences might look smaller, but they will be more engaged.

The Simple Act of Loving Well

<!–Written by Alex Blackwell | –>

The most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and to let it come in. – Morrie Schwartz

Every day we get the chance to love well. Sometimes we take this chance; sometimes we ignore it and sometimes we are fortunate enough to receive it. Loving well is a simple, pure gift given from the heart. It doesn’t require much planning or effort; it just requires the awareness to do it.

Loving well is about lifting our heads to see who is waiting beyond our reach. It’s about being aware of the needs of others and, when appropriate, to place these needs before our own. To love well is an unselfish act of giving without considering what’s in it for us. The simple act of loving well is the antidote when a heart needs some tender nourishment.

Learning to love well

My understanding and need of love has changed over the years. Even now I’m still learning how to love well as a father, son, sibling and of course as a husband. When I’m faced with the choice to love well, I remember these lessons:

Love cannot be rushed or forced. It has to be given the space to grow and breathe.

To love well is to celebrate the imperfections, too.

Love starts from the inside and then works out.

Love needs to take quiet breaks along the way.

To love well is to know when to stop talking and to start doing.

Love points to our hearts’ true north when we feel alone.

Love never expires; only our ability to feel it.

To love well is to show more gratitude than disappointment.

Knowing how to love someone is more powerful than the best intention.

Love sees through the shame to acknowledge the beauty that lives within.

Love finds peace in the chaos.

The way we love ourselves shapes our confidence.

To love well is to look for an opportunity to be an encourager.

Love is the witness to goodness.

The best gift we can receive is to be given a second chance to love.

To love well is the point of being human.

Simple, one word acts of loving well

The act of loving well is not defined by how large we love, but by how we love gently, sweetly and simply. When we do this, love’s wonderful message continues to fill our hearts with its grace. The simple act of loving well can sometimes be defined by just one word. While tremendous effort can live behind each word, the results of these words can be seen immediately:

generous
compassionate
trusting
forgiving
awareness
sensitive
kindness
patient
passionate
sharing
supportive
positive
accommodating
responsive
sincerity
authentic
inspiring
understandingWhich one word touches you the most? What is one simple act of loving well you have provided or received?

Small businesses are confident about their ability to weather the recession, with more than one-half saying they have either fully recovered or will do so by the end of 2010, and nearly three-quarters claiming they will drive recovery in the overall economy, according to the “Third Annual FedEx Office Signs of the Times Small Business Survey” from FedEx Office and Ketchum.

To that end, almost two in five small-business owners reported they would be growing their businesses with social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. That was up from less than one-quarter who planned to up their game with social in 2009 and made social media the only tactic to increase in importance since last year.

About 42% of small-business owners said they would increase spending on advertising and marketing this year overall.

“Small businesses are definitely getting it right when it comes to identifying and investing in the tools that will help them bounce back from a difficult period,” said Randy Scarborough, vice president of marketing for FedEx Office, in a statement.

E-mail marketing solutions firm Constant Contact likewise found small businesses optimistic about their economic prospects in 2010, with 70% expecting to grow this year. Website and e-mail marketing were a bigger priority than social media, but Facebook was considered important by more than one-half of respondents.

Posted By: Nicole Perrin

A February 2010 Edison Research study of Twitter usage and demographics is making the rounds on several blogs, and some readers think they have found a problem for microblogging marketers: Twitter’s failure to convert awareness to usage.

However, that finding is not about brand awareness—unless the brand is Twitter itself. The site rose in popularity last year and got plenty of attention from the mainstream press. The result? Almost as many people have heard of Twitter as Facebook.

At the same time, relatively few people who have heard of Twitter actually use it. That “conversion rate” may be a problem for Twitter itself, though the service still boasts tens of millions of users (and counting), and keeps those users engaged over time.

But for marketers, there is plenty of data to support targeting Twitter. The Edison study itself found more than one-half of Twitter users followed a brand, compared with just 16% of other social network users. Small businesses have found Twitter effective for lead generation, and Twitter users are more likely than Facebook users to respond to brand recommendations from friends. There is also evidence from companies like IBM and Dell that Twitter promotion can make millions.

Skepticism is healthy, but perhaps the most experienced social media marketers are onto something and Twitter marketing is worthwhile.

With several profiles and thousands of posts, Twitter hasn’t produced a single client for me. The only benefit I see is another notch in the SERPS.

GREAT REPORT!

I’ve retweeted this twice, I think its a great article. I had someone follow me the other day, I noted she also had a linkedin profile. So the connection was made on Twitter, we connected on LinkedIn, and now she’s working helping and volunteering for our group! And she has 17,000 followers. Moreover, if and when someone like that “retweets” you, you are exposed to more ppl.

Twitter also works great as a search engine, as the user can control what data flows across his/her screen. It also saves time by being an efficiency tool. Our tweets can be displayed on iGooge, itself an efficiency tool and on our LinkedIN profile, so we are not having to go back and forth.

Online Video Goes Mainstream

APRIL 28, 2010

This year, eMarketer estimates that 66.7% of US Internet users—147.5 million people—are watching video online each month. By 2014, that figure is forecast to rise to 77% of Internet users, or 193.1 million people. In the same period, online video advertising spending will surge from $1.4 billion to $5.2 billion.

The roots of a content-delivery platform rivaling that of TV are beginning to take hold and will continue to grow over the next five years as consumers become comfortable with watching all forms of video content—long and short, professional and amateur—on their Internet-connected phones, laptops, desktops, tablets and TVs.

But by 2014 the notion of monthly viewership, eMarketer’s current standard, will likely be outdated. Daily or weekly viewing will be the relevant frequencies, with usage perhaps measured in minutes and hours spent each day, as it is for a small yet significant and growing portion of teens and young adults who expect content to be available anywhere on demand.

Already, 29% of Internet users under 25 say they watch all or most of their TV online, according to a survey commissioned by Retrevo.

A closer look at viewership rates by age shows classic early-adopter patterns, with 18- to 34-year-olds exhibiting the highest viewership.

eMarketer projects significant growth in video viewers across all age groups in part because of how easy it is to share content online. But the amount of time baby boomers and seniors will watch online video will be smaller compared with their younger counterparts because of their familiarity with traditional TV viewing.

I would rather talk then type, contact me and I will show you how to do the same….

5 Ways Classrooms Can Use Video Conferencing

The author of two books, 12-year-old Adora Svitak published her first, Flying Fingers, at the age of seven. In addition, she has spoken at some of the nation’s pre-eminent education conferences and taught students around the world via her video conferencing programs. Most recently, she spoke at the TED conference.

What do you think of when you hear “video conferencing?” Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) meeting with GE executives over TelePresence in 30 Rock? Big corporate boardrooms? Or maybe, just maybe … a classroom of fourth graders?

Believe it or not, there are almost 30,000 video conferencing systems in U.S. schools, service centers, district offices, and departments of education. Many are used every day to connect students around the world.

The ways that video conferencing can enhance the educational experience are numerous. Ginger Lewman, director of the Face2Face program at the Turning Point Learning Center in Emporia, Kansas said that video conferencing has been used “as an essential learning opportunity for the past four years. We’ve been connecting with students across the U.S. and the world to bring religion, geography, history and service learning to vibrant life.”

But how exactly do you use a video conferencing system in education? Below are five ways to use video conferencing in the classroom.

1. Connect with Experts

Turning Point Learning Center makes frequent use of video conferencing, and Ginger Lewman remarked, ”It allows our students, ages 10-14, to begin to develop not only essential communications skills, but also an acute awareness of global issues. It is always a joy to get to talk with experts and peers face to face and in real-time!”

I use distance learning every day to talk to students about the importance of reading and writing. Schools request programs from “content experts” to hear about a certain area of study. For example, knowing that writing was a weak point for their students, New Market Elementary teachers Miss Brown, Mrs. Deck, and Mrs. Ramsey participated in my video conference, “Personal Narrative Writing: Acing your State Writing Assessment & Beyond.” New Market Elementary’s media specialist, Nancy Kochert, said that “students left the session very excited and chatting about Adora’s age and abilities.”

Such responses are typical of fun and productive video conferences with content providers or experts. Content providers could be individuals, museums, non-profits, and learning centers.

2. Virtual Field Trips

Any school field trip usually requires a lot of preparation — there’s the food, then the transportation, then the mischievous students, and most importantly, making sure not to lose anybody. It’s a whole lot harder to “wander off” when your field trip is on a screen in front of you.

Whether to a museum or a zoo, virtual field trips are becoming increasingly common in video conferencing schools. According to an article from Scholastic Instructor magazine, Pennsylvania’s Mt. Lebanon School District was able to offer its middle school students a chance to see a volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. Scholastic Instructor described the video conference:

“In e-Mission: Operation Montserrat, a ‘mission commander’ at the center interacts live with the students, relaying reports about lava flow and evacuee progress, showing video clips of ash clouds over the island, and sending seismic data and information about hurricane intensity to students’ laptops. They analyze the information, make predictions about risks, and suggest courses of action.”

In a quote from the magazine article, instructional technology coordinator Aileen Owens said, “Kids don’t find studying rocks exciting. That changes when you make learning come alive like this.”

3. Working Together

Students in a classroom in, say, Wyoming, could connect with a classroom in Wisconsin and work together on a collaborative activity. While in the past, collaborative activities might be limited to one classroom or one school, video conferencing allows students in multiple schools around the world to work together on relevant issues.

One benefit of such an exchange would be that you might receive different views and fresh ideas from a class of students who are miles away, than you would from someone you’ve known for years. The Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration dedicates an entire section to collaborative activities, both for educators and students. Topics range from “Impact and Challenges of Rural Water Pollution” to “Transportation of the Future.”

Interactive Videoconferencing: K-12 Lessons That Work, by Kecia Ray and Jan Zanetis, offers another example: “Employability Skills and Distance Learning: Michigan Students Come to Ohio.” Michigan’s Galien High School connected with the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in Ohio to grow a deeper understanding of the job application process through collaboration.

Collaborative activities typically work toward a practical goal (such as cleaning up rural waters) while helping students develop organizational, collaborative, and leadership skills.

4. Accessing Previously Unavailable Courses

Some schools, especially those in rural areas, aren’t able to offer advanced or detailed courses that their students might need. Even those in more populated areas often lack enough teachers in certain subject areas. Many schools could benefit from having an extra course over distance learning that they might not be able to offer otherwise. Instead of having to commute long distances between different schools, teachers would be able to instruct over video conferencing.

What’s more, “previously unavailable courses” can mean some pretty exotic content. You might have dissected squids or made model skeletons, but how many times have you seen a live knee replacement surgery in science class? At COSI (Center of Science and Industry) in Columbus, Ohio, showing live knee replacement surgeries over video conferencing is nothing new.

Video () conferencing is a powerful medium for giving students unparalleled access to places (or procedures) they could have only dreamed of in the past.

5. Teaching the Teachers

I not only speak to students over video conferencing, but also to teachers, providing a “kid’s eye view of the classroom.”

Because learning is a continual process for teachers, and teachers must acquire a certain number of professional development hours (a percentage of which should be dedicated to technology) to maintain certification, video conferencing offers a convenient way for many school districts to meet these requirements. In addition, even students can learn from their teachers’ professional development — once, I spoke to teachers in Florida’s Broward County School District while students looked on.

Conclusion

Although these may all be school solutions, you can apply many of the same principles to business as well. When it comes to connecting with experts, why not set up a video conference with your consultants instead of flying them in?

If your company has far-flung offices, connect them with video conferencing instead of paying for expensive flight tickets. You could connect to previously unreachable markets (like education, or an international market), and provide professional development and training for new employees. Video conferencing breaks down boundaries — inside the classroom and out.

LiveF5 New Release (Codename Didymus)

We are proud to announce the release of Version 2.9 (codename Didymus), featuring the much-anticipated CoHost feature

LiveF5 CoHost:

Host Hand Off to CoHost – The Host now has the ability to invite and manage CoHosts at any time. You can have any number of CoHosts on your broadcast and easily switch among them on the fly, and the switch is nearly instant.

Request to be CoHost – Any participant in the broadcast can request to be a CoHost. The Host has the option to suppress these requests.

Invite to be a CoHost – The Host can invite any participant who is listed in the participant tab to be a CoHost.

CoHost without an Account – Any participant can become a CoHost even without an AttainResponse account, the only difference being that they can’t push slides. Obviously, they will also need a mic and/or webcam.

CoHost Private and Public Chat – In addition to the Global chat tab, a Co-Host chat tab will appear when a co-host is present. Only the host and any co-hosts can view and participate in this chat.

CoHost Preview Window – When you are a CoHost, but not yet presenting (which is the “OnDeck” status) a view of the current Host’s video and slides allows you to watch the broadcast while preparing your camera settings, slides, etc.

Table of Contents on Archived Recording – A new chapter is created whenever a CoHost becomes the live presenter. These chapters are listed in a Table of Contents overlay in your recording. Your viewers can skip to specific chapters when viewing your archived broadcast simply by clicking on a chapter title. After you end your broadcast the chapter edit mode automatically appears, allowing your to rename any chapter. In addition, when viewing your archive from your LiveF5 Home tab the chapter edit mode is automatically launched rather than the standard playback mode, so you can edit your chapter names at any time.

Additional LiveF5 Features:

Record Broadcast Button – You can now start and stop recording your broadcast at a time of your choosing, rather than when you click the Start Broadcast or Stop Broadcast buttons. This will help eliminate the recording of any dead time before or after your presentation in your archived broadcasts.

On-video Status Overlay – An overlay on the video feed will tell you whether you’re currently broadcasting (Live) or not (OnDeck). You, as a Host, will have the OnDeck status before you begin broadcasting; a Host or CoHost will have this status while waiting to become the Live presenter.

Cleaner PPT and PDF Conversion – When you upload a Powerpoint or PDF file to MediaF5, it will be converted as usual, however, the converted images will no longer appear in that folder and create unnecessary clutter and storage. In addition, the image gallery that was previously created is no longer created. Now you simply work with your file only. When you select the file in the new “Share/Documents” tab, the slides will be available in the preview filmstrip just as before.

“Documents” Tab Within the New “Share” Tab – The previous “Galleries” tab has been renamed to the “Share” tab. Within the Share tab you now have two options for sharing, one for Documents and one for Galleries. Within the Documents tab you can create, edit and delete folders as well as upload PowerPoint and PDF files directly. This saves you the time and hassle of having to first upload it in the All Files tab of MediaF5.

Mute Your Audio – You can choose to mute your audio at any time during a broadcast with the click of a button. This will allow you to hold an audio conference, for collaborating, while presenting slides rather than broadcasting audio, which is one way. Audio conferencing currently not included – hint, hint .

Audio-only Broadcast – You can choose to hold an audio-only broadcast simply by clicking the video suppression button at any time before or during your broadcast.

Standalone Chat Widget – You can now embed a standalone chat widget alongside your video player widget. The chat log is not recorded. This new chat widget has a solid list of cool features, so check it out.

New LiveF5 Player – The LiveF5 player has been updated to have a more professional design and layout. It now fades in instead of sliding in, has rounded edges, is more compressed, the play/pause/etc. buttons are smaller, and the dropdown menu for adjusting the video size has been replaced by four small buttons.

Redesigned Video and Chat Panel Layouts – The video and chat panels have been redesigned to provide a cleaner, more professional layout as well as provide more space to the chat area.

Blinking Chat Notification – If text is entered into a chat (Global or CoHost) and you’re not viewing the Chat tab, the tab will blink to notify you of new activity.

FMLE for Mac Support – We now support Flash Live Media Encoder for Mac. We changed the tab names to reflect that we support these products fully.
